It’s Allergy Season

Anytime a person suffers from allergic reactions — in this case, seasonal allergies — it is due to an issue in the body’s immune system. The immune system is the body’s defense system, protecting the body while attacking potentially harmful substances.

When this system is functioning, it works to keep you healthy, fight off infection and/ or disease, and assists with handling stress. All this is possible when the immune system and the nervous system can communicate effectively. However, if there is any nerve interference, the immune system, along with the nervous system, will not function properly.

Common Allergy Triggers

When there is miscommunication between the body’s immune and nervous systems, especially as the seasons change, patients may experience allergic reactions, sinus congestion, asthma, shortness of breath, and other similar symptoms. Some of the most common triggers for fall and winter season allergies are:

· Dust. More specifically, dust mites. While more common during summer months, dust can be stirred up when turning on the heat in the house for the first time. Symptoms, such as runny noses and sneezing, decrease the more time heat is run throughout the house. In addition, kids will encounter dust while at school, whether in the classroom or out on the playground.

· Mold. Of course, the first thoughts to appear when thinking about mold is what you may find in a basement or a bathroom. Mold spores love wet spots both inside and outside the house, such as piles of damp leaves on the lawn. In addition, humidity, dry and windy weather from hot summer months can cause mold to start releasing spores into the air, well into the cooler months that follow.

· Ragwood pollen. One of the biggest allergy triggers during the fall — even into winter — is ragwood pollen affects most people who are allergic to spring plants. As the pollen is released it can travel long distances during September and October. Certain foods such as melons and zucchini can cause allergic reactions due to having contact with ragwood pollen. Some people know this type of allergy trigger as hay fever.
